Generally considered a method to gain publicity, public relations has previously been subjected to severe limitations. By understanding the essential elements of public relations, we can make the entire activity significantly more useful and more effective. In order to fully understand the concept behind Public Relations (also known as PR), we must first look at its definition. Public Relations is defined as, "Good works, well publicized". If an organization or websites good works are not well publicized, the business or organization will have a difficult time in obtaining new clients or business. Public Relations is essentially a matter of reaching people with an idea of some kind and gaining their agreement. Throughout this article, we will explore ways in which you can improve your public relations skills and effectively increase your business.. The Missing Ingredient Too often, public relations personnel tend to forget to include a single factor in attempting to publicize an organizations good works: reality Reality is essentially agreement upon perceptions and data in the physical universe. What matters is degree with which people agree with the perceptions and data that you put before them. In order to understand this, one should think of a triangle. We will call the top of the triangle Affinity, the bottom left of the triangle Reality, and the bottom right of the triangle Communication.
Affinity is similar to the word like, however affinity is a two way proposition. With affinity, not only must you feel that you like something, you must feel that it likes you as well. Communication is the exchange of ideas across space. The way that an organizations good works are publicized is directly related to how effectively it communicates. By properly using these three elements, Affinity, Reality, and Communication, you can effectively cause peoples agreement with your projects. If any one corner of the triangle is raised, say communication, the other two corners will rise as well. If you communicate will with your customers, they will begin to have more affinity with you and your business will seem more real to them. Another option is to give them a hands on demonstration of your product or service, thereby making your product more real to the customer and making him or her more willing to communicate with you about the product and raising their affinity level in the process.
Traditional Public Relations personnel would have us believe that public relations is simply communication with ones clientele. They tend to forget that there are two other elements as well. If we do not take the other two elements into consideration, say for instance the reality element, many times we end up losing customers because the topic is not real to them. A classic example of this is the car mechanics shop. In many cases, an auto mechanic can discuss a problem with a customer, but the customer, not understanding the way that engines work, does not understand what the mechanic is attempting to tell them. By simply taking a couple extra minutes to explain the way that engines work, perhaps even showing models to the customer, a mechanics shop would highly increase the reality of the situation to the customer, making them feel valued and well liked by the mechanic. This would allow the shop to communicate with the customer better, as well as cause the customer to further appreciate the service offered them. By making this simple change in the operating procedure, and properly balancing the three corners of the triangle, the customer would feel better about bringing their car to that shop, as well as recommending it to their friends. Other examples could be shown as well, however space in this article is limited. Most importantly, however, remember to include all three elements of the triangle in your public relations and your business will skyrocket.
